According to federal and state guidelines, all school district participating in the School Breakfast Program and the National School Lunch Program, must have a Local Wellness Policy in place at the district level.  The Local Wellness Policy mandates that school districts develop policies that address student nutrition, physical activity, nutrition and physical education, and overall environments that support healthy eating and physical activity.  The Vermilion Parish School System has taken an additional step to establish policies that focus on staff wellbeing and overall outcomes.

The Louisiana Legislature states that all school districts within the state must have a School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) which consists of a representative from the schools, administration, students, and the community.  The primary goal of the SHAC is to improve, enhance, and maintain the health and well-being of all students along with cultivate a healthy learning environment through the implementation of this policy (Louisiana RS 17:17D).
