Read. Create. Write. Inspire. GHS Introduces Its First Writing Club
Gueydan High School has a new club geared towards interests the students have shown. The Writing Club is the newest addition to the GHS campus. Sponsored by Ms. Crystal Patin, the Writing Club is for both Middle School and High School students who maintain a GPA of 2.5 or above with an interest in creative writing.
“Inspiration for the club came about when students began asking me to read some of their writings which were done outside of the school setting,” said Ms. Crystal. She continued, “I was a little surprised at the requests. Writing seems to be one of the areas many students struggle with, so I thought we should try to get them a support group going.” After a showing of overwhelming interest in creative writing, the club began to take form.
There are two separate clubs within the Writing Club, one for high school students and one for middle school students. The purpose of the club is to inspire and support one another through the creative writing process. Since we began the club late in the school year, the main goal we have for this year is for each student to write their own short story. As the students work on their stories, the club will conduct workshops where they will share their work and offer constructive criticism and feedback to their peers. For high school, the workshops will be held bi-weekly. However, due to the high number of students who have shown interest in middle school, the middle school club is further divided into workshop sessions and will meet on a rotating basis.
“The students have spoken, and we listened,” added Ms. Crystal, “I can’t thank Mrs. Nadine and Mrs. Tiffini enough for allowing me to give the students an opportunity to express themselves and potentially follow a dream that would not have otherwise been available to them.”
