Some of the best students and teachers in Louisiana are right here in Gueydan, and we think they deserve some recognition, so this is our chance to get to know them a little better. This is our GHS Staff Spotlight on Mrs. Ava Couvillion-Ellyson.
What's your name?
Ava Couvillon-Ellyson
What do your students call you?
Mrs. Ava
How long have you been teaching? How long have you been at Gueydan High?
This is my 2nd year teaching
What was your favorite subject when you were in school?
English and Speech
What do you love most about being a Gueydan Bear?
Being that GHS is such a small school, I love that I am able to build positive and personal relationships with my students. Even though I am the teacher, my students have taught me so much about being compassionate, understanding, and patient. They have made me a better person and a better teacher. I am so thankful and proud to be a Gueydan Bear.
Who or what inspired you to be a teacher?
My dad was a principal and teacher and I have always admired and looked up to him. He has taught me so many important life lessons and really inspired me to become an educator. I wanted to make s difference in this world, just like I know he did.
What's the farthest you've ever been from home?
Jamaica
What's something you learned through failure?
I learned that without failure, nothing would mean anything. If you were perfect at everything that you did, it wouldn't be meaningful. If you never failed, you would never know the importance of hard work and perseverance.
If you could go back in time to when you were your students' age and give them advice, what would it be?
Be the nice student in every single situation and class that you are in. Be the student that stands up for the kid that is being bullied. Be the kid who sits with the student that is all by themselves at lunch. Help and show the new student around school.
What's one thing people would never guess about you?
My family was on a British reality TV show.
What's your favorite quote?
"It's nice to be important but it's more important to be nice"
