Name: Katelyn Bares
What is your favorite part of your job?
My favorite part of teaching FACS is all of the fun, hands-on, interactive learning that we get to do. My students are learning valuable life skills and sometimes don't even realize it!
How many years have you been working at Kaplan High?
I have been teaching at Kaplan High since November of 2011. This is the only place I've ever taught :)
What is your favorite thing to do outside of school?
Outside of school, I love spending time with my family
What is something people would never guess about you?
My life is pretty chaotic. I love organization, schedules, and routine but I struggle to maintain that. My desk is usually a mess but I know exactly where everything is.
What inspired you to become a teacher?
I had so many incredible teachers who inspired me! I was set on NOT being a teacher even though I knew in my heart that this is the profession I was called to do. I went into college as an undeclared major and my first academic adviser set me on a path to discover my true passion. I'm here today because of all of the great educators I've had in my life!
Did you graduate from Kaplan high school?
I did not! I am from a small town in north Louisiana. I graduated from Dodson High School in Winn Parish.
What is your favorite TV show?
I'm a true crime junkie!! I love Dateline, 20/20, and any true crime documentary!
What Grade levels and subjects do you teach?
I teach all grade levels, mixed classes of 9-12 students. Right now I am teaching FACS I, FACS II, Food & Nutrition, and Advanced Food & Nutrition. I also do Customer Service and ServSafe certifications.
If you had to pick another subject to teach, what would it be?
If I were to do something other than FACS, I would teach business classes. Entrepreneurship and financial math are very closely tied to the FACS curriculum and I would feel comfortable in that department. I also would like to pursue school counseling at some point in my career.
What are your favorite hobbies?
I love a good book! I also like to cook, garden, do crafts and DIY projects,
What do you love about teaching at KHS?
I love my students the most!! I have a really unique opportunity to really get to know my students and form great relationships with them. I love cheering them on as they are headed into their next chapter in life. There is nothing more fulfilling to me than when I see students later who are successful and using the skills that they learned with me--being responsible adults, contributing positively to their communities, being great parents to their children.
Are you involved in any extracurricular clubs or sports at KHS?
I am a chapter adviser for FCCLA (Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America)
I am part of the junior class sponsor team and put on prom with the help of Ms. Mia.
